This is how holiday rental owners described Kalamata

Peloponnese (the south edge of mainland Greece) is the geographical department that displays a large number of historical sights, a rich partition of coasts, a hinterland with beautiful nature, villages with a remarkable arcitecture, developed cities and a high touristic infrastructure.

It boasts the largest and most spectacular concentration of ...

ancient sites, including Mycenae, Epidavros, ancient Messini and Olympia, where the Olympic games were founded. Less known but equally fascinating are the many Byzantine (medieval) cities, churches and fortresses, including the hilltown of Mystras and the sea-rock of Monemvasia. The rugged Mani peninsula, central of the three ‘fingers’, positively bristles with towers and frescoed chapels. Or, if you fancy something more civilised, check out the elegant seaside town of Nafplion, with its narrow alleys, tiled houses, castles and festivals.

Those who prefer natural wonders to man-made will not be disappointed. The southerly mountain range of Taygetos offers breathtaking gorges, spring flowers and well-maintained mulepaths to link them. Some of Greece’s finest beaches can be found on the westren finger around Pilos, or along the endless pine-shaded strand that forms the west coast. If someone is looking to visit just one part of Greece with a bit of everything, Peloponnese is certainly the place.
This is a wonderful place for relaxing, painting, reading, walking, on waymarked paths alone or with a leader, and bird watching. Winters are mild with plenty of bright sunny days but chilly nights. Summer is much longer than the tourist companies would suggest with beautiful, clear days right through December and January. Wild flowers cover the landscape from late September onwards and right through until mid-May.
The sea is extremely clean and clear. Snorkelling is worthwhile. Swimming is safe in Kalamata.
Among the many gifts of Kalamata, stands its beach, where one can reach in a few minutes on foot, even from the centre of the city. This long beach with high trees and coloured umbrellas is not only one of the most beautiful places to go for a walk, but also a great choice for swimming and lying under the sun. The presence of hundreds of people every day makes Kalamata beach look like a popular beach in an exotic island.
Traditional bakeries and fish taverns stand together with hotel beaches and non organized sections, exactly as the tourists stay together with local families or young companies with little kids fishing. The beach consists of sandstone and deepens smoothly, while the fact that it is in the centre of the Messinian Gulf guarantess that the water is quiet and warm. The beach of Kalamata is organized, wide, and has been awarded with the Blue Flag (award for clean beaches).
