show more Achada that football was played for the first time in Portugal in 1875. It was Harry Hinton (son of the wine and sugar merchant Willian Hinton), who organize it and brought the ball from London.
Several theories explain the origin of the name of the village. The most known is that the name is due to the influence of D.Fernando Camacho (a local noble of Spainish origin).
PLACES OF INTEREST:
- Café Relógio (Clock Café)
Located in the main square, this building is the headquarters of Madeira’s largest wicker export company, with a sales room with pieces of all shapes and sizes including a curious collection of animals. In this building you can also find the famous restaurant of Cafá Relógio.
In the late 19th century, Dr.Michael Grabham (an English doctor married to daughter of Blandy) decided to build a tower to house a clock. The clock came from the parish of Wolton near Liverpool. This tower was renovated several times over the years.
