The Casas Da Vereda are situated in Estreito da Calheta, specifically in the Vereda do Girão de Lá. The term “Vereda” means footpath / a narrow path used only for walking.Footpath Houses - Casas Da Vereda.In Madeira Island there are many paths of variable degrees of difficulty to be crossed by foot, some traversing steep and exposed slopes to reach rural homes / barns or patches / terraces of agricultural land.Just recently the footpath of the Casas Da Vereda was enlarged into a narrow agricultural road, which now provides car access to the property doors.

The Casas Da Vereda were designed to minimise their impact on the environment while being energy efficient. The project shows harmony between tradition and innovation without sacrificing quality. Here are some of the materials that were used:• cork, a national and ecological product in parts of the façade and thermal insulation• basalt stone from the island in parts of the facade• natural paints plasters and paints• collecting and storing rain water from levadas for irrigation purposeWater is used as the central element of tranquillity and relaxation at Casas Da Vereda and the garden is designed to create some privacy between the 3 houses by use of vegetation.
