DISTANCES Chania Airport: 50 km (45 min. drive to Kournas/Kavalos village). Souda Port of Chania: 35 km (25min. drive to Kournas/Kavalos village). Heraklion Port or Airport: 103 km (90 min. drive to Kournas/Kavalos village). From Chania airport or Souda port: Follow the signs to the highway in the direction of Rethymnon. Take the highway. Upon reaching Georgioupolis decrease your speed. After 600m you will see a sign to Kournas Lake, follow the signs to Kournas Lake. Drive for another 3,5km, when you reach the crossroad who leads to the Lake at your right hand you will see the Tavern Souhlis. There turn left and drive for another 400m. When you reach a steep crossroad turn sharp right, drive for another 350 and you will reach Minoas Villas on your right. From airport or harbour of Heraklion: Follow the signs to the highway in the direction of Rethymnon – Chania. Take the highway. Pass all the exits to Rethymnon and continue, headed in the direction Chania. After the exit to Episkopi, decrease your speed. 4 km later, on your right-hand side, you will see a sign marking the end of Rethymnon prefecture. 2 km later you will reach the tourist village of Kavros. Keep your eyes on your left-hand side. The first exit is at the BP Petrol Station, there turn very carefully to enter Kavros and drive straight for 200 meters at the cross road turn right and follow the signs for Kournas Lake and Kavalos Tavern. Drive carefully for another 2,5km at a steep crossroad keep left following the signs to Kavalos. After 350meters you will reach Minoas Villas at your right. Kournas Lake is the only freshwater lake in Crete. Lake Kournas was known as Lake Koressia in antiquity but later took its current name from the Arabic word for lake. The lake is in a beautiful landscape, lying in a valley among the hills, about 4 km from Georgioupolis in Chania Prefecture (west Crete). Lake Kournas is relatively small, with a maximum length of 1,087 m and a maximum breadth of 880 m. It covers an area of 579,000 sq. m. and is generally shallow, 22.5 m at its deepest point, while it lies approximately 20 m above sea level. Kournas lake with the sea near Georgioupoli in the background Kournas Lake is the ideal place for an afternoon walk or a daytrip nearby. Many people like to have an afternoon picnic there. The landscape is lovely and relaxing, whether you want to go for a walk in the countryside, swim or ride a pedalo on the lake. There are two springs on the southeast bank, one of which, the Mati or Amati (“eye”) as the locals call it, is visible in late summer. The lake is fed by streams from the nearby mountains and hills, whose underground courses are interrupted by the local bedrock on the way to the sea.
