With dramatic cliffs rising vertically from the sea, calm sandy beaches providing ideal bathing conditions and a lush inland landscape criss-crossed with picturesque narrow valleys, the countryside is often seen as Bornholm's prime attraction. The island's charming harbours are characterised by their small smokeries where visitors can observe fresh herring being smoked in the local fashion. The island has its own culinary tradition, with local specialities such as 'Sun over Gudhjem' - cured herring served on dark bread with caper buds, onion and egg yolk - available across the island. Bornholm is also a true paradise for anglers, with excellent conditions for virtually all types of leisure fishing, especially outside the summer season.
